ABLAZIONE SONORA

C° ∝ dB
The installation “Ablazione Sonora” (Sound Ablation) narrates and condenses 24 hours of melting activity from the Adamello Glacier through its “groans.” Using four bioacoustic recorders, scientifically placed deep within crevasses and fractures during the summer of 2021, over 3,880 hours of recordings were collected — creating a constantly evolving sound archive.
The installation translates the collected scientific data into an engaging perceptual and emotional experience, offering a unique perspective on the negative implications and consequences of climate change on fragile ecosystems. 92% of Alpine glaciers are at risk of disappearing by the end of this century.
The artist’s intent is to transform the exhibition space into a crescendo of sensations, echoing those personally experienced during the glacier expeditions.

Ablationn. [from Late Latin ablatio -onis, derived from ablatus, past participle of auferre “to carry away”]
– The loss of ice due to melting, evaporation, sublimation, or the detachment of masses.

Ablazione Sonora consists of a multi-channel audio system, a light source, and a display showing the temperature, time, and sound intensity recorded at the moment of each audible event. These data are thus directly connected to both sound and light, and the artist’s intention is to transform the MUSIL’s white room into a crescendo of sensations — echoing those personally experienced during the glacier expeditions.
